Watched & Read 2022: Week 5

I used to dream longingly about watching Disney movies with my daughter. She watches TV happily but wouldn’t sit through a whole actual movie. And then Encanto came along and I learned to be careful what you wish for. I’m joking of course, I absolutely love it, but there’s only so many times you can watch Encanto until you’re singing about Bruno in your sleep. I think she’ll be ready for her first cinema trip soon though, and I’m so looking forward to that.

If I logged all my watches of Encanto onto Letterboxd then I may geta call asking if I’m okay, so let’s not log that and instead talk about what else I managed to watch last week, yes?

licorice-pizza

Licorice Pizza (2021) – Ahh…I’m sorry, this didn’t work for me at all. It worked well enough as a story and the cinematography was gorgeous, but I really didn’t buy the romance at all. I actually didn’t care about the age difference, for me it felt like Gary was much more mature for his age, and Alana the complete opposite, so it didn’t bother me. What I couldn’t stand was the fact that I felt no chemistry at all between them, and they were both absolute jerks. Unpopular opinion I know, but please don’t let this win Best Picture.

Hotel-Transylvania-Transformania

Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (2022) – I’m pretty sure I missed a movie in this franchise somewhere, I don’t remember Mavis and Johnny having a kid. I wasn’t expecting a lot from the 4th movie but I was still pretty disappointed with it. There just wasn’t much of a story and all the funniest bits were already shown in the trailer. You win some, you lose some!

the-to-do-list

The To Do List (2013) – My February pick for Hidden Gems is Aubrey Plaza! I just love her, and I’m really looking forward to picking out a few of her older movies that I’ve missed. First on the list was another list! I don’t know how I missed this one, there’s so many other great comedians involved. The movie was alright, funny but nothing special. I don’t think Aubrey was the right choice for the character she played – and there’s one particular scene involving a poop that I just can’t erase from my brain.

moonfall

Moonfall (2022) – What kind of week has it been when Moonfall is the best movie I’ve seen all week?! All jokes aside though I had a lot of fun with it. Of course it’s stupid, and some of the acting is truly terrible, but it was pure, popcorn fun and exactly what I needed to cheer me up after a tough week.

week five tv

I’ve started watching The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, and it’s good so far. It took me a few episodes to work out what the vibe was, because as much as it felt like it’s purpose was to mock movies in that niche, it still felt quite serious. The comedy comes in the smaller details though, and I’m invested to see where it’s all going to lead.

What I’ve been loving the most though has been Murderville. Oh my goodness, this is a show made for me. Every episode is a new crime to solve, and the improvisation is so funny to watch. I’ve seen 4 episodes so far and there’s only 2 left. I want to watch them right now and at the same time I don’t want it to be over! I can only hope others love it as much as I do so Netflix comission more episodes.

The Book of Boba Fett is just getting better and better, but sadly only because Boba Fett isn’t really in it anymore. I really hope Grogu doesn’t have to choose between the lightsaber and the beskar armour. Also…is there a chance we might get to see little Ben Solo in a future season?!

cytonicOnto books! My streak of a week per week has finally ended, as I knew it eventually would. I’m still reading Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson, and I think I’m a little over halfway done with it. I just seem to read different genres at different speeds, does anyone else find that? Anyway, I’m still enjoying it. It definitely feels like a filler-book in the series, I think the fourth will be the last one, but I’m so invested in Spensa and the other characters that I don’t really mind. I do hope that something big happens soon though, because the pace feels quite slow still.

I’m out tonight to see Jackass Forever at the cinema which I never thought I’d find myself saying. I loved the show so much back in school and college, I’m really hoping this movie is just as fun!

  1. Sorry that Licorice Pizza didn’t work for you. Personally, I loved it as it just made me think of those times that my dad was living through and the music. Oh, I love the music.

I hope Grogu ends up choosing both but also take Luke to help Boba Fett. Jennifer Beals better not be dead because I will be really upset.

  2. I’m not interested in Licorice Pizza either, but like you, I don’t think the age difference would have been an issue as well. Like you said, maturity and personality and chemistry are way more important. I feel sometimes people just like to complain for the heck of it.

I gave up on Boba Fett after the 2nd episode, lol!

  3. Not interested at all in Licorice Pizza even though it’s one of the Oscars nominees, wish they showered C’Mon C’Mon with more love, it’s such a heartwarming movie.
