So, here’s the thing. I’ve never walked out of a movie at the cinema, and I don’t think I ever would, either. If I’ve made the commitment to leave the house and part with my hard-earned money to see a movie, then I’m sticking it out till the end, and worst case scenario, I’ll blog about how crap it was the next day.
That said, there are a few movies I’ve watched at home where despite my best efforts, I just couldn’t watch anymore and I’ve turned it off before the end. Those are the movies that I’m going to be talking about for this week’s Thursday Movie Picks, hosted by Wandering Through the Shelves.
This is going to be a great week I think, so extra thanks to Brittani at Rambling Film for coming up with the idea! Here are my picks…
Sideways (2004)
Sideways is a widely loved movie, I know. I was informed of such when it was lent to me, with a promise that I would enjoy it because it had a ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ vibe about it. I HATED this from the very start. Never have I ever seen two more unlikeable characters. For a while it was fun to watch it and complain at the same time, but it’s just over 2 hours long and it was time I would never get back, so I turned it off about half an hour before the end. I couldn’t even look at a bottle of wine for at least a month afterward.
The Interview (2014)
Fun fact – I can’t stand James Franco. There’s just something about him that winds me up and I can’t put my finger on it. That said, there are movies of his that I’ve really enjoyed, but just as many that I’ve hated. This Is the End is one of my favourite comedies of all time so you know, I’ll always give the guy a chance. The Interview, however, was dull, unfunny, and I don’t think I actually stuck it out for that long at all.
Superhero Movie (2008)
Remember the early-mid noughties when we had an onslaught of spoof movies for every genre out there? There were a few that my teenage self actually kind of loved. You’ll have to forgive me, this was pre-blogging when I had an appreciation for actual good movies. Whether Superhero Movie was just exceptionally bad, or whether it was just one spoof too many, I couldn’t make it to the end and gave up.

Same here! I’ve never walked out of a movie at the cinema either, but have definitely stopped more than a dozen movies when at home. Lady in the Water is one. I’ve also tried watching Master and Commander twice, and still haven’t managed to finish it. 😂

Oh, Lady in the Water is so terrible. I stuck that one out because it was so bad it became quite funny to watch.

The Interview is so bad! I’m 90% sure I watched Sideways but I don’t remember a damn thing about it. lol. I never bothered with those spoof movies. I threw in the towel after Scary Movie 3.

I’ve never seen any of these films but I’ve seen trailers/clips and they all looked terrible. I think some films look good on paper, and that’s where they should stay

I couldn’t agree more! Sometimes though I just get pulled in, in the hope that it’s going to be sobad it’s good – if that makes sense!

I’ve never walked out of a movie but I barely managed myself to stay through ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, Zoolander 2 & 50 Shades Trilogy (I watched them just to check if it was possible for them to improve at any point – which never happened).

Oof, you’re braver than I. I couldn’t face Avatar or Zoolander 2. I did sit through the 50 Shades Trilogy though and watch then get worse each time…

Yes I do the same… Especially if there’s alot of hype around it. Suicide squad is a prime example. That film is terrible… I knew that from the trailer, but had to watch it.

Sorry you didn’t like Sideways but yes, Superhero Movie was shit but it wasn’t from the same assholes who brought us Date Movie, Meet the Spartans and other spoof movies that cater to the lowest common denominator.

The only theater movie I walked out of was a Jennifer Lopez movie called the Cell. Probably shouldn’t have been there to begin with but it was just too violent and too weird! I don’t think I’ve seen any on your list so that’s a good thing 🙂

The Interview is a strange beast. The whole Sony pictures hacking story made it more famous then it had any right to be. I’ve seen 2/3 picks here. I liked Sideways, didn’t care for The Interview but it managed to finish it

nice choices Allie. I personally LOVE Sideways, but can completely understand why some (like u) hate it.
I can only recall walking out of a theater twice in my life – Young Einstein and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Hated both of them and was with a group of friends both times and we all walked out.
My policy now tho is quite different than it was back then.
I now, MUST finish any movie I start to watch no matter how bad because like u said, as a movie blogger, I can just complain about how terrible it was afterwards (and believe me, I’ve seen my fair share of really bad awful films)
There are always a few every month that I wanna turn off, but dont allow myself to stop them midway through.

I couldn’t agree more with you on Sideways. I watched it when it was also recommended to me by a number of friends years ago and I hated it. I remember this sensation vividly, although my brain refuses to remember anything from the movie itself!

Ken once took me and Tristan to see a documentary about baby animals in the wild. It was Mother’s Day. All the baby animals were attacked or killed by predators eg “See the baby elephant separated from the herd by the prowling pack of tigers…” I got up and walked out.

I like Sideways but it is an odd movie. It’s one of my brother’s favourites. I have not seen the other 2 and will make sure not to.

A movie needs to be quite awful for me to stop watching – I think Horrible Bosses, Focus and I will join you on The Interview – and I agree, James Franco is the world’s most annoying person.

i echo your sentiments of franco. i think his problem is his ego. i don’t remember his mannerisms during interviews, but his demeanor, the smugness he carries himself while out in about – either in person (captured on and blasted to my iphone because youtube) or in character – is obnoxious, to say the least. i’m glad jonah hill ditched the dudebro squad (james franco, michael cera, seth rogan) to create mid90s, a powerfully candid look at growing up during the turn of the century.
i will say, though, that i enjoyed franco’s palo alto, and i’m looking forward to his biopic on charles bukowski.
