Does anyone remember the days when superheroes were confined to comic book pages, rather than dominating our screens? I feel like it wasn’t that long ago, and yet I don’t remember a time now that didn’t involve waiting for that year’s big Marvel or DC release. Then these masked heroes made their way onto our screens at home, and that was deadly exciting. Although nowadays, every show is connected in some way, and if you aren’t fully caught up with each hero’s individual show, the crossovers are going to confuse you.
Sigh. Can we go back to the days of Smallville, when we only had to worry about 1 show? Someone’s going to tell me there was a connected show to that now, and make me look silly, I just know it.
Anyway! This Thursday brings another series from Wandering Through The Shelves, and this week we’re talking about Superheroes and Super Powers, which is good, because my opening paragraph would have looked silly if we weren’t. These are my favourites:
I’m specifically talking about Season 1 of The Flash here, because that was some great TV. A good origin story, a cast with genuine chemistry, and a really, really good bad guy. There was mystery, and a little time travel made the story even better. I gave up somewhere in the middle of Season 2 because it was just getting ridiculous. Does anyone still watch this? Does it get better again?
Who would have thought that the Daredevil character would be redeemed after that terrible movie, which for the record I guiltily enjoyed? At this point I feel Netflix are unstoppable at the moment, and Daredevil has some of the greatest fight scenes ever made in terms of both filming and choreography. I’m behind on the rest of the Marvel/Netflix shows though!
I might be ‘pushing’ my luck here but Pushing Daisies was such an amazing show! Lee Pace’s character, a piemaker, has the powers to bring any dead person back to life, simply by touching them. The downside? If he touches them again, they stay dead forever. He uses these powers to bring back his childhood sweetheart, who he know can’t even hug. This show could have been so morbid, but it’s colourful and often hilarious!

I also chose Daredevil. It’s my favorite of the Marvel Netflix shows. I never watched the other two.

I haven’t seen any of these. I did try Daredevil. The truth is, I have major comic book fatigue and had no real interest let alone passion to begin with. I think Sean watched more of Daredevil, and some Luke Cage. We’re not that into series – so much of a commitment! Aren’t we terrible?

No, you aren’t!! Seriously, I’m getting tired of superheroes myself now. I still enjoy the movies but there are so many shows now, and they all connect so you can’t just watch one, and ain’t nobody got time fo dat!

I still watch The Flash, but it isn’t that great anymore. There’s a new Harrison Wells, he is a really cool guy, but unfortunately, he is pretty much the only good thing about the new season.

Love the inclusion of Pushing Daisies! What a great show, charming and sweet with a pitch perfect cast….so of course it only lasted a year! Ugh! I haven’t seen your other two but one of mine is an earlier version of the same character.
There does seem to be a plethora of superhero shows now but I think it’s a cyclical thing. Back when I was a kid they were all over the three networks after the success of the 6 Million Dollar Man followed quickly by the Bionic Woman, Wonder Woman etc. and then slowly they faded away. That will probably happen again.
So I was never much for superhero series but I did manage to come up with three I at least liked.
The Tick (1994-1996)-Ridiculously amusing animated series about a somewhat thick superhero clad in a bright blue costume along with his moth costume wearing sidekick Arthur, who has a wry, patient attitude with his often lunk-headed compatriot fights the bad guys in “The City”. They blunder about but still somehow manage to say the day. What else is there to say about a superhero whose call to arms is “SPOON!”
The Flash (1990-1991)-When Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp), a forensic police scientist, suffers a freak accident being struck by lightning and covered in chemicals at the same time a chain reaction occurs giving him super human powers and the ability to move at the speed of sound. While learning how to control his new found powers a calamity occurs which sets him on the path to be the protector of the good people of Central City. Short-lived series had a nice sense of humor mixed in with its action sequences.
The Greatest American Hero (1981-1983)-After a chance encounter with aliens in the desert late at night where he is gifted with a magical red suit high school teacher Ralph Hinkley (William Katt) along with fellow witness FBI man Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp) attempt to fight crime using the suit’s powers. A couple of problems present themselves right away, Ralph and Bill are a silk and sandpaper match and even more troubling the pair have lost the instructions for the suit so they have to puzzle out how it works as they go along leading to trouble and a lot of bruises for Ralph. Engagingly played by Katt & Culp along with Connie Sellecca as Ralph’s girlfriend Pam.

Season 1 of The Flash was soo good. Season 2 not as great but I will still watch season 3.
